It has to be for a specific reason. For instance there are scholarships for male athletes, male nurses, male pediatricians, even for the male’s gardening club. But if I wanted to start a scholarship foundation for men only because they are men, I could potentially face legal battles.
However, I am able to start a scholarship program for women, just because they are women…..
As a mother of both girls and boys I find that sexist and down right ridiculous.
What do you think?
If you fund a scholarship – you can decide who gets the money.

Because women are historically less privileged educationally. It is sort of dated now that women are starting to surpass men in enrollment and graduation, though.

Bull$hit. If it’s your money, you could give a scholarship to anybody you want for any reason.

Yes, I thought it was common knowledge. You CAN give a scholarship to anyone you want, but if you advertise the fact you’re giving a scholarship to a man simply for being a man you better believe somebody will bring up a lawsuit against it, and they’ll have a good shot at winning. I suppose if you didn’t make a big deal that you were giving money to men for being men you might be able to get away with it for a while, until the pattern started to show up.

Yes, that is sexist and downright ridiculous, especially considering that women now outnumber men in almost all areas of post-secondary education. I’m not advocating affirmative action for men, but I am advocating gender-non-specific scholarships.
